Why You Shouldn't Buy Cosmetics in Jars
--
There are a lot of creams in jars, tubes, and bottles on the market. Although, most of the time we choose creams according to ingredients, cost, and/or a brand, we often do not pay attention to the packaging of a product.
Why? Is the packaging of a product important for consumers or not? Do we really need to pay attention to the packaging or not?
I used to buy skincare products in jars before I heard about disadvantages of cosmetic jars. I did not know that using products from jars can lead to skin conditions. I got acne after using products from jars, so I am speaking from experience.
The problem is when you use a cream from a jar you stick your fingers inside of it. This leads to a contamination of the product, because your fingers cannot be absolutely clean. Even though bacteria are invisible to our eyes, the consequences are really noticeable - irritation, acne and more. Bacteria grows in water and, for example, in non-oily creams the water-base percentage is 60–90%. So the next time you apply a cream to your face, you’re essentially applying bacteria to your face as well.
However, you do not need to throw away all the jars that you have unless they have preservatives and stable ingredients. And you can use a cream spatula instead of your fingers. Still, you actually should wash the cream spatula and some people even sanitize it with chlorhexidine.
Furthermore, once you open a jar the product is repeatedly exposed to air and light. Some ingredients can be damaged, for example, vitamin C and retinol. So it is better to avoid jars if you want to use creams with these ingredients. Purchase a product in a protective packaging, for example, dark bottles especially with airless pumps, and/or tubes. In addition, they are more hygienic.
